The Misanthrope

by John Kenworthy and Moliere

Producer John Kenworthy has rewritten a play around Moliere’s original plot.

The action takes place in an imaginary present, in Catherine’s garden, in a small market town.

A mild social satire, it’s humour comes from the witty dialogue, as Alex, a man of stern principles and out of step with the rest of society, battles to justify his own philosophy of life. He is in love with Catherine, an out and out flirt, and observes as she is pursued by almost every male in the vicinity, including Oswald, a local dignitary and poet.
