The Heartwood String Quartet are the first of our New Generation Musicians this season. They formed in 2020 over a shared love of chamber music whilst in their first year of study at the RNCM. Their programme includes the Beethoven Op 18 String Quartet No. 5. Many in our audience will be acquainted with this quartet which exhibits the influence of both Haydn and Mozart and many think that he left them far behind in developing the theme. Musicologist Kai Christiansen described the piece as dynamic and rich in texture. The first movement is bright, bold and luxuriant. The third movement ends with an explosion of fireworks.
In August 2022 Heartwood appeared as Quartet in Residence at the Lake District Summer Music Festival, performing in venues such as Kendal Town Hall and Ambleside Parish Church. They have also participated in concert series around Manchester, including Didsbury Coffee Concerts, St Ann’s Church, Buxton Pavillion, and Monday Night Musicales.
The name ‘Heartwood’ comes from the spruce tree from which string instrument sound board tops are crafted. The heartwood receives the silent string vibrations, these are then amplified by the maple body which creates the unique bowed string sound.
