Remembering Roger Tanner- a musical tribute
On the anniversary of Roger Tanner’s birthday January 24th we have invited emerging pianist Michael Shiu to play some of Roger’s own compositions as well as some of his favourite pieces as a fundraiser for Millgate Arts Centre Building the Future appeal
Join us for a sparkling reception before the performance followed by a buffet supper in the bar after the show.
Roger Tanner was a great supporter of the arts in Saddleworth, founding the Saddleworth Concerts Society and supporting Millgate Arts Centre. He was a talented pianist and studied the piano at London School of Music until the outbreak of World War 2 cut short his studies, he joined the RAF and after the war joined the family business. Whilst studying in London Roger wrote several piano pieces.
Tickets £25 ( including fizz and buffet ) www.millgateartscentre.co.uk
We have had generous donations of the Fizz, buffet, piano hire, and pianist which means all ticket proceeds are going to the Building the Future Appeal

Michael Shiu Bio
Michael is an emerging pianist, conductor, collaboration artist and music educator. He obtained his master’s degree in piano performance at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) under the tutelage of Adam Swayne, the College’s Deputy Head of Keyboard Studies. Before moving to the UK, Michael graduated from the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), where he is grateful to have received the guidance of concert pianist Cherry Tsang. He has performed in the masterclasses of Sir Stephen Hough, Geoffrey Burleson and Alexandra Dariescu.
Besides the piano, Michael is also enthusiastic in conducting, having served as the assistant student conductor of the University Choir and the conductor of the Staff Choir during his study at the HKBU. Michael proudly counts Colin Metters, Rodolfo Saglimbeni, Toby Purser, Günter Neuhold and Mark Heron as his conducting mentors.
Michael is an active accompanist and chamber musician. His repertoire includes a vast collection of duo sonatas, songs and concert arias. He has also performed with his clarinet trio in Manchester, Lancaster and Rochdale. His experience in working with other musicians brought him opportunities working with the northwest-based choir Saddleworth Singers. After a successful tenure as the resident accompanist of Millfield School in Somerset, Michael is currently the Music Performance Tutor of New Hall School in Chelmsford, Essex, running concert series and designing the music co-curricular programme for the school.
